Bay Area Argentine Tango Association

Sunday is a calm day in Buenos Aires. Most stores are closed, there
is almost no traffic and people are out in the parks and cafes,
enjoying life. Walking in San Telmo, I stumbled upon a tango
orchestra of 8 young people…all playing saxophones!! Yes, quite
different….no bandoneon nor violin, just saxophones. As I stood there
on the street, listening to a beautiful interpretation of one of
Troilo's pieces and glanced at the renaissance & old Spanish style
buildings surrounding us, I thought, "this is Buenos Aires!" An hour
later, I was dancing tango, in a little open-air plaza, with one of
the best tango teachers of Buenos Aires, at a free milonga that
happens every week, and later, there I was watching a soccer match at
a funky but clean little pizza place that sold delicious "pizza a la
piedra"…they had a sign that said that when live soccer was on the TV,
the minimum consumption was $5 pesos…that's approximately $1.66 dollars!!
again, I thought, "this is Buenos Aires!"

And, daily it seems I discover another unique turn-of-the-century
café, or a great and cheap place with wonderful salads or
"empanadas"….quaint "barrios" and parks....Things aren't as
inexpensive as they used to and prices keep going up for everything,
but it's still an incredible city at an incredible value!
